boring
I'm starting to live my life
the way I can
and I've been called
a lot
boring?
I cringe,
I sigh,
boring?
can make
a heart stop
I'm starting to live my life
the way I can
and I've been called
a lot
boring?
oh, yes
the agony
the harmony
I have fought
boring?
you
boring?
are
boring?
all
boring?
the
boring?
same
boring?
I have thought

I'm starting to live my life
the way I can
and I've been called
a lot
boring?
I laugh
I lie
boring?
while I
keep
my eye
on the
clock
boring

sometimes. boring

You Move A Lot

He was unimpressed with the choices I'd made
I was lying in the sun he was lying in the shade
leaving in the morning for New Mexico
I couldn't take a winter with too much snow

I was lending my feet to the southwest shores
I thought a lot about it, never been there before
He didn't want to be left behind

I said the truth is baby that the weather here is fine

You think a lot when you're twenty years old
I can give you my heart, can't give you my soul
Yeah you think a lot when you're twenty years old
I can give you my heart, can't give you my soul

I was drinking wine he was drinking gin
and I knew the situation that I'd got myself in
I told him right there by the riverside
as I saw the brown darken in his eyes

He picked at the grass and started to say
you can't keep living your life this way
you go out traveling all the time
not thinking about your future
with me in mind

Yeah you love a lot when you're twenty years old
I can give you my heart, can't give you my sould
You love a lot when you're twenty years old
I can give you my heart, can't give you my soul

So I said goodbye with my feet not my words,
and I can't help thinking that he might of over heard
I got holes that I need to fill
now I can't move forward by sitting still
Women like me they understand
how good feet feel on changing land

You move a lot when you're twenty years old
I can give you my heart, can't give you my soul
Yeah you move a lot when you're twenty years old
I can give you my heart, can't give you my soul

Nineteen Year Old Blues

I got the nineteen year old blues
I can smoke my cigarettes
but I can't buy my own booze

and I know why
my big brother he'll buy and buy

So I was riding in my car, and,
riding shotgun was my herbal mason jar
whats wrong with that?
homegrown blend matter of fact

I probably should have been going
just a little more slow
and theres a cop, hey,
what do you know
he pulls me over

....good thing I was sober

May I see your license and registration please?
I handed both documents over to him
with such gentle ease
he said whats that smell?

...mother nature can't you tell?

he set off on the marijuana illegal rant
and I said thank you sir
i'm going home to water my plants
cause I live in America
and I was taught not to be scared of ya

I got the nineteen year old blues
I can roll my own joints
but I can't buy my own booze

and I know why
my big brother he'll buy and buy

A chemistry book taught me
how to make my own wine
and though I can't consume it
i'm still feeling fine

And if a scientist can genetically alter
the food I ingest and if the national
government can shut down a forest
without a protest
we got bigger problems on our hands,
export your business to a foreign land

I got the nineteen year old blues
I can shoot a gun but I can't
buy my own booze

I was walking through down town memphis
had my guitar for a gig
and hey what do you know
the bouncer won't let me in
he said wheres your ID?

....fake one or real one, which you wanna see?

I got that nineteen year old blues
I can sing in bars
and I get free booze

And I know why
age can't determine if you're wise.

I Got A Man

I got a man
he pay all my bills
he hold me and he love me
till the river run still
oh yeah

I got a man
he scrub my dishes clean
he love me when I'm nice
lord he love me when I'm mean
oh yeah

Oh Oh Oh Yeah
Oh Oh Oh Oh

I got a man
he play bass guitar
he build me a house
lord he fix my car
oh yeah

I got a man
he drink the finest wine
even when he's busy
he still finds time
oh yeah, oh yeah

I was nineteen he was twenty nine
when we stole kisses on the Mississippi Line

took me to New Orleans
purples, golds, greens
showed me colors that I never have seen

I got a man
crazy as a bat
he sing me sweet songs
by the railroad tracks
oh yeah

I got a man
been all round' the world
at the end of the day
I'm still his girl
oh yeah

I was nineteen he was twenty nine
when we stole kisses on the Mississippi Line

took me to New Orleans
purples, golds, greens
showed me colors that I never have seen

Oh Oh Oh Yeah
Oh Oh Oh Oh

love in the afternoon

I wake up in the morning, I am cold

I go to sleep at night, I am colder.

sometimes,
I boil water for tea
and don't drink it

I go to sleep at night,

I am colder.

A Bitter Perfume

The perfume of the sea is a bitter one
that of the salt, that of the sun

sweet like wine
burn like scotch

tossed upon the sand
tossed upon the rocks

oh but the man she loves
wears it in his hair
leaves when the wind is rough
leaves when the wind is fair

sleeps by her side, in the wildness of the night
with that lingering smell
comfortable and light

she listens for his engine
rumble home in the afternoon,
for a woman knows her sea mans humble tune
just as she knows

that bitter perfume

The Inconvenience Of Selling It To The Sea

There's a full moon rising over Sagadahoc Bay
you swear to god you love him more then yesterday
the tide is going out, you're taking off your shoes
you've realized that you have everything to lose

you walk on to the flats, look up to the sky
Seguin smiles cause she catches that twinkle in your eye
whatchu gonna do?
You close your eyes cause you don't know what to say
you don't know the price you may have to pay

you sold your soul long ago
to the salty waves and the easterly wind that blows
now you want it back
you've came to retrieve it, to give it to a man
who treats you nice who wants to take your hand

the sky she blows black, the gulls they start to cry
you know how many women like you have tried?
you're a smart girl, we know you understand
time and tide will never wait on a man

The Moon & I

The Moon and I spooned once
he made me swear to jesus himself
that I would never tell
any dirt roads or chord progressions

I promised, but you see,
The Moon,
he don't believe in promises

I almost kissed The Sun
with my Moon promising lips
she told me I was in no state
to receive kisses like this

I agreed, but you see,
The Sun,
she don't sign contracts

Why My Hair Is Short

A boy once told me that a girls hair is suppose to be long and beautiful,

                                       he told me real soft

I smiled because I suddenly had the urge to cut mine all off.

MY FAVORITE PHONE CALLS

As the southern sun bleaches my hair and thoughts back to strawberry blonde,
dad calls to ask what the moon is doing
harvest moon tonight! can't you feel the energy in the air, dad?
I know he can, he taught me

The corn I cared for all summer in our garden was sweet and tasty,
yet scarce he informed me. One sloppy, butter salt bite would have his mind made.
The man knows his corn. How did my watermelons and cantaloupes hold up, dad?
I know the corn was sweet and tasty, he taught me

Without a goodbye, he hangs up the phone. Click.
My father,
the man who put a piece of land in my name when I was the competent age of 3 months,
My father,
the reason why I've never given myself away freely to anyone,
or bought any item of clothing full price,

hangs up the phone without saying an I love you
he doesn't have to, he taught me

Fare Ye Wells

As the tiered diesel engines slowly omit their shakey breath
to the elderly harbors morning mist
the gulls hiss their songs of fare ye wells
August has left with all her ringing bells

cottages boarded up
with their new age security units
exhausted from their belly fulls
of sandy feet and estival romance

back to the suburbs or the cities
on winding roads that dance through
salty rivers and streams
accompanied by painted mail boxes
and a brisk ocean breeze

they leave crystal clear wine glasses
perfectly spaced to dry
while Coors Light cans litter the bushes
near Georgia's blueberry pies

the front porch of the store seats
all the weathered old men
who'll smile if they know you
and if they don't dear,
they'll pretend

the fishermen's eyes
will shortly fade to grey
and won't come back alive
until the next warm april day

so as the tiered diesel engines slowly omit their shakey breath
to the elderly harbors morning mist
the gulls hiss their songs of fare ye wells.

I'm A Little Bit In Love With Everyone

some nights I walk
some nights I smoke cigarettes
and I think about a world of regrets

some nights I talk
some night I don't understand
how a woman could revolve
around one man

cause I'm a little bit in love with everyone
I'm a little bit in love with everyone
I'm only nineteen and my conscious is clean
I'm only nineteen and my conscious is clean

some nights I don't think
about you or the things you gotta do
the promises you've made
the debts that you paid

cause I'm a little bit in love with everyone
I'm a little bit in love with everyone
I'm only nineteen and my conscious is clean
I'm only nineteen and my conscious is clean

I ain't kissing anybody so I'm gonna go ahead
gonna drown my taste buds with Heineken
smoke me some of that tennessee weed
ain't nobody telling me who I need
ain't nobody telling me who I need

Cause I'm a little bit in love with everyone
I'm a little bit in love with everyone

Appreciate

it is important
to stand under a night sky
shirtless
so exposed skin
can appreciate
hands
that drive machines
that pick
the cotton
of your
new jacket.

it is important
to drink yourself sick
so liver
can appreciate
sweet tasting blood
that flows
on the expressway
from a brain
to a heart

it is important
to love with ears
so eyes
can appreciate
what they have
in front of them

it is important

to walk with
feet bare
on crushed rocks
so heels can truly
appreciate
the grass

January, Stop Being Smitten

January,
stop being smitten
you're not suppose to smell like May
In fact, your breath wreaked
of frothy pines only yesterday

Your hair,
swept back with the blistering gales
palms peeled & cracked
your knuckles bruised pale

There is no time,
to go around parading and pretending
that your time is up
your parole is ending

The Tree & I,
we are sisters you see
we both are never made a fool
tomorrow your sky will blow gray
and we will again taste the hollowness of cool.

Nobody Found Anything By Being Sure

I am passionately in love with good parts...
 and bad parts.
don't tell my parents, I am the adventure.
the world?
she is so so bad, yet so so good.
 my biggest role model yet.
see all of it. meet everybody.
you need to through yourself out-- tastefully.
if you want to walk barefoot, for chrissakes walk barefoot.
 you, yes, you,
are apart of this vast and ever changing
 landscape.
ask questions, ask so many questions. but don't. people differ, like the plants, like the colors.
 know that.
be your own question. try everything once,
 at least once.
 maybe twice if it tickles.
be bad, but mainly, do good.
believe in the time you have, in the people who love you. if nobody loves you, love yourself.
all they want is your money,
 or your love
so no need to be getting uncomfortable.
squeeze the sweet sweet juice out of every situation that betters you, another human being, or the environment in which you escape.
don't show them what you're all about, be what you're all about.
if you simply smile, you hold all the cards. nobody found anything by being sure.

nineteen

 A boy
 I'd never met
 told me
 he liked the way
 my eyes looked
 when I smiled

I asked him if he wanted to run away

Lobsterman Hands

red skies sailors take warning
but fishin' boats leave the docks by morning
they know that the wind is their boss
and the sea she'll turn and toss

I will always respect a man with lobsterman hands

no business suits or clocks to punch
vacation days, sick days, or lunch
if you want yourself a pay raise
the tides don't take no mercy or praise

I will always respect a man with lobsterman hands

there are men who make millions with their minds
pull a few strings, tell a few cheap lies
the only way a fisherman gets rich
is if his daughter gives him a good luck kiss

I will always love a man with lobsterman hands

callused palms don't have the softest touch
but simple folk we don't need much
and when this world comes crashing down
I know the type of hands I'll wanna have around

I will always respect a man with lobsterman hands
